The Philosophy discipline welcomes applications for graduate work on Continental philosophy. The discipline has expertise in nineteenth and twentieth-century German and French philosophy, including, but not limited to, German Idealism, Schopenhauer. Nietzsche, Heidegger, Foucault, Bachelard, Canguilhem, de Beauvoir and existentialism.
Applicants are advised to consult individual pages of the potential supervisors to discover their particular research interests. The discipline has a lively community of research students, several of whom work on Continental philosophy.
Several of our Continental philosophy research students have successfully participated in the OU Teaching Scheme to gather valuable teaching experience, and have organized their own international postgraduate research conference.
Research and research students are at the heart of the discipline. In joining us, you would join a lively and friendly graduate community. The discipline hosts papers by visiting speakers throughout the year and an annual graduate conference where students give papers on their work in progress.
Minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent). Most successful applicants to the research degree programme have an MA in Philosophy (or equivalent). If you are not a UK citizen, you may need to prove your knowledge of English.
