The Philosophy discipline welcomes applications for graduate work in the history of philosophy; in particular, ancient philosophy, 19th- and 20th-century German philosophy, late-19th- and 20th-century French philosophy, and the history of philosophy of science. Several members of the discipline work in this area: Sophie Grace Chappell has published extensively on Ancient Philosophy; Cristina Chimisso is an authority of the history of philosophy of science; and Manuel Dries specializes in 19th- and 20th-century post-Kantian European philosophy, in particular German idealism including early German romanticism, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Heidegger.

Research and research students are at the heart of the discipline. In joining us, you would join a lively and friendly graduate community. The discipline hosts papers by visiting speakers throughout the year, and an annual graduate conference at which students give papers on their work in progress.

Minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent). Most successful applicants to the research degree programme have an MA in Philosophy (or equivalent). If you are not a UK citizen, you may need to prove your knowledge of English.
