The Philosophy discipline welcomes applications for graduate work on Continental philosophy. The Department is particularly strong in nineteenth and twentieth-century German and French philosophy, including, but not limited to, German Idealism, Schopenhauer. Nietzsche, Heidegger, Foucault, Bachelard, Canguilhem, de Beauvoir and existentialism.
Applicants are advised to consult individual pages of members of the department, notably Cristina Chimisso, Manuel Dries and Sophie-Grace Chappell to discover their particular research interests. The Department has a lively community of research students, several of whom work on Continental philosophy.
Several of our Continental philosophy researchers have successfully participated in the OU Teaching Scheme to gather valuable teaching experience, and organized their own international postgraduate research conference.
The Department hosts papers by visiting speakers throughout the year, and an annual graduate conference at which students give papers on their work in progress.
