Educational aims

This qualification aims to provide you with:

  • an appreciation of different lines of evidence and key debates related to biomedical sciences topics
  • the ability to understand and assess a range of concepts, data and terminology relevant to biomedical sciences
  • the ability to consider and evaluate examples of evidence-based practice and scientific method and apply your understanding of biomedical sciences in your professional role
  • the ability to develop your skills in written and computer-based communication and information literacy; using a variety of text-based, graphical, numerical, audio-visual and online sources, generating, presenting and interpreting data; and using a computer to support your learning and practice
  • the ability to communicate your enthusiasm and foster your confidence in studying and working in biomedical sciences, and a framework to equip you with the study skills necessary for independent learning and further stud
  • the ability to communicate topics pertinent to biomedical sciences in their broader personal, cultural, ethical and social contexts.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

On completion of this qualification, you’ll have knowledge and understanding of:

  • essential concepts, principles, theories, ethical frameworks, and current issues in biomedical sciences
  • the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, systems, and processes in the human body
  • the human body in both health and disease, focusing on diagnostic techniques, including biochemistry, microbiology, haematology and histopathology.

Cognitive skills

On completion of this qualification, you’ll be able to:

  • implement research strategies, develop and present reasoned arguments, and justify results
  • to critically analyse information from different sources and recognise the potential uncertainty, ambiguity and limits of information and knowledge in biomedical sciences.

Practical and/or professional skills

On completion of this qualification, you’ll be able to:

  • conduct and report on scientific investigations or practical tasks using practical and professional skills such as personal responsibility, initiative, and applying appropriate ethical frameworks
