Postgraduate Diploma in Systems Thinking in Practice

Course code: E28

This diploma develops your ability to approach and tackle complex, messy problem situations. It provides practical tools that bring new perspectives and approaches to problem-solving; it may change your thinking about a task or wider situation of interest. You’ll consider other people’s roles, reflect on your own and others’ practice and assess how the different components are related. The course develops holistic thinking and collaborative working skills, helping you move towards effective solutions and avoid systemic failures.

  • The opportunity to top up to our MSc in Systems Thinking in Practice in just one more year

This postgraduate diploma is the same as the first two-thirds of MSc in Systems Thinking in Practice (F47). The first half is the same as our Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Management (C72).

Credit transfer

If you have already completed some successful study at postgraduate level at another institution you may be able to transfer credit for this study and count it towards this Open University qualification. If you wish to apply to transfer credit you must do so as soon as possible as it may affect your choice of OU modules. If you are awarded credit for study completed elsewhere, you may find that you need to study fewer OU modules to complete your qualification with us.

On completion

On successfully completing this course, we’ll award you our Postgraduate Diploma in Systems Thinking in Practice. You’ll be entitled to use the letters PG Dip SysPrac (Open) after your name.

How long it takes

Most students study the Postgraduate Diploma in Systems Thinking in Practice part-time, completing 60 credits a year over two years. Typically, this means 12–14 study hours each week.

You must complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Systems Thinking in Practice within eight years.

The knowledge, skills and understanding developed through this postgraduate diploma can be applied in many different situations. They are particularly relevant to managing and innovation in areas of practice that range from business and consultancy to health and social care, environment and development to engineering, technology and information systems.
