This diploma develops your ability to approach and tackle complex, messy problem situations. It provides practical tools that bring new perspectives and approaches to problem-solving; it may change your thinking about a task or a wider situation of interest. You’ll consider other people’s roles, reflect on your own and others’ practice and assess how the different components are related. The course develops holistic thinking and collaborative working skills, helping you move towards effective solutions and avoid systemic failures. You’ll choose option modules from engineering, business, development, environmental and innovation management.

To gain this qualification, you need 120 credits. You'll study two 30-credit systems thinking modules and choose 60 credits from a range of option modules.

You’ll study the Postgraduate Diploma in Systems Thinking in Practice part-time, completing 60 credits per year over a two-year period. Typically, this translates to 16–20 hours of study per week.

The recommended hours include time to work through that week’s online study planner, complete recommended reading, and attend tutorials.

You must complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Systems Thinking in Practice within eight years.

If you’ve studied at university level before, you may be able to transfer the academic credit you've been awarded towards an OU qualification. This could save you time and money by reducing the modules you need to study.

The knowledge, skills and understanding developed through this postgraduate diploma can be applied in many different situations. They are particularly relevant to managing and innovation across areas of practice ranging from business and consultancy to health and social care, environment and development, to engineering, technology and information systems. The flexibility in choosing modules allows managers and other professionals from a range of industries, across the private and public sectors, to select complementary modules that enable them to tailor their learning.
